Seafarer mental health crisis addressed at MHSS conference

Mental health in the maritime profession took center stage as Mental Health Support Solutions (MHSS) held its inaugural conference at the City of Dreams Manila to address the psychological challenges faced by Filipino seafarers.

The half-day event featured key voices from clinical psychology, religious ministries, and the maritime industry. Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) Executive Director Dr. Carolina Uno‑Rayco delivered the keynote address, offering both professional insights and personal testimony as the daughter of a former seafarer. She called for integrated mental health services that support both seafarers and their families.

Psychologist and wellness advocate Gisa Paredes emphasized the need to shift from crisis response to preventive care, citing research-backed programs that bolster crew resilience. The Sailor’s Society presented a case of onboard discrimination faced by a young Filipino officer, underscoring the urgency of cultural sensitivity and support services.

Panelists advocated for family-inclusive wellness programs, spiritual grounding, and systemic reforms, including improved rotation schedules and mandatory psychoeducation in maritime institutions.

MHSS announced plans for a follow-up Cadet Wellness Conference on October 18, aimed at equipping future seafarers with tools for psychological preparedness.

The event marked a pivotal step toward destigmatizing mental health support in the maritime sector and redefining the role of Filipino seafarers beyond the traditional breadwinner archetype.
